Your Customers' Requirements

In many cases, the decision has already been made for you.

Some customers, distributors or procurement policies only accept one certification scheme. If that's the case, their requirements will determine which certification you need.

Where Your Raw Materials Come From

If your suppliers are already certified under a PEFC-endorsed national scheme, following the same certification route may be more straightforward than switching to FSC.

The right choice isn't about which scheme is "better"—it's about which one best fits your supply chain and commercial requirements.

One Important Point: Neither FSC nor PEFC Replaces EUDR Due Diligence

This is particularly important for businesses preparing to comply with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

As explained by Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), forest certification—whether FSC or PEFC—does not replace the due diligence system required under the EUDR.

Certification can be an important element when assessing risk, but it isn't a legal shortcut and doesn't exempt companies from implementing their own due diligence system.

Put simply:

Certification helps. Compliance still requires due diligence.

Choose the Right Certification—Not the Fastest One

FSC and PEFC share the same objective: demonstrating that timber and other forest-based products originate from responsibly managed forests.

Where they differ is in their governance, certification models and market recognition.

The right certification depends on factors such as:

• The countries where you source your materials.
